Where An Post’s packet rate beats every courier
An Post prices small flat items as packets, not parcels, and no courier price we hold gets near the packet rate at the lightest weights. This is the one case where walking to the post office is the cheaper option, and it covers most single-garment sales.

What has to fit inside a packet
Up to 2 kg, with length plus width plus depth no more than 900 mm and no single side over 600 mm. A folded dress in a mailer passes comfortably. A pair of boots in their box does not.
Packing to stay in the band
The band is decided by the greater of what the scales say and what the tape measure says. For resale, the tape measure is usually the one that catches you.
Mailers, not boxes
The same jumper is a fraction of the volume in a padded mailer that it is in a rigid box, and a box can push a genuinely light item into the next band on volume alone. It is also the difference between a packet and a parcel at the counter.
Weigh it packed
Tape, filler and the mailer itself are part of the weight. An item that weighs 940 g on its own can leave the house at 1.05 kg, and 1.05 kg pays the 2 kg price.
Do not guess the measurements
The depot measures what arrives, and a parcel that measures over is re-rated after collection, which turns a known cost into a surprise one. Check the box before you book.
Drop-off or collection, when you post one thing a week
For a seller shifting a few items a week, drop-off is nearly always the cheaper option and often the more practical one: no window to be in for, and the scan at the counter is your proof.
Collection earns its keep when you have several parcels going the same day, or when the item is too awkward to carry to a shop. Below that, the premium is real money on a resale margin.

Selling to buyers in Britain
Great Britain is outside the EU customs union, so every parcel needs a customs declaration, and the buyer can be asked for VAT before it is handed over. That is worth saying in the listing rather than discovering in a dispute.
Northern Ireland is different: no declaration either way, and An Post prices it at its domestic rates.
Proof of postage and cover
