The current low-value exemption changes
The existing customs duty exemption covers online goods valued at €150 or less. Delivery charges are excluded from that value. Revenue says the changes take effect in Ireland on 1 July 2026, bringing a €3 charge per item for online goods from countries outside the EU, including Great Britain.
How Revenue counts identical items
Revenue gives the example that two identical pens count as one item. They attract €3 customs duty plus VAT.
Payment is required before delivery
Check whether the checkout collects the customs duty before paying for your order. Where it hasn’t been collected at checkout, Revenue says the delivery company requires €3 per item before delivery. Allow for that payment when budgeting for an online purchase shipped from outside the EU.
Check where the goods are and the return terms
Check where the goods are located when you order. Revenue says no customs duty applies if they are already in Ireland or another EU country at that point.
Factor the duty into purchases you may return. Revenue says the €3 customs duty isn’t refunded for returned goods unless those goods are faulty.
