Prepare your product and dispatch details
Write down the products you intend to sell, where each will ship from and the destinations you want to serve. Shopify’s shipping profiles use those details alongside your rates. Group products by the shipping arrangement you intend to give them, so you can assign the relevant locations, zones and charges.
- List the products that will share a shipping arrangement.
- Record the dispatch locations for each product group.
- List the destination zones you want each group to serve.
- Choose the rate type and any conditions for each zone.
For an existing catalogue, review products that have no assignment to another profile. Shopify includes them in the default shipping profile. Check that this profile covers the dispatch locations and destinations you intend to use for those products.
Configure shipping profiles and destination zones
According to Shopify, a shipping profile determines which products ship from which locations to which zones and at what rates. Use another profile where a product group needs a different arrangement from the default.
Work through each profile from the products to their dispatch locations, then their destination zones. Shopify lets you set a shipping rate for each zone. Choose that rate for the products covered by the profile.
Before adding a destination, identify every profile covering the products you intend to sell there. Review the destination zones and rates in each relevant profile. If you move products between profiles, review the locations, zones and rates in their new assignment before dispatch.
Choose checkout rates and their conditions
Shopify describes flat, free and calculated shipping rates for destination zones. It also describes conditions based on weight or order value. Choose how you want to charge the customer in each zone before setting those conditions.
| Rate type | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Flat | Set a shipping charge for the zone. |
| Free | Offer shipping with no charge to the customer. |
| Calculated | Use a calculated shipping charge. |
For weight conditions, write down the parcel weights you want each rate to cover. For order-value conditions, write down the basket values. Review the conditions together within the zone, including any flat or free rates you intend to offer.
Choose conditions for each destination using the shipping arrangement for that zone. Review its parcel costs before copying a flat charge or free-shipping condition from another zone.
Check carrier service eligibility before using live rates
Shopify’s carrier service provides live shipping rates. Shopify lists Advanced or higher as an eligible plan for creating a carrier service. Review your store’s plan against that requirement before building your checkout setup around live rates.
Shopify deactivates a carrier service association if a plan change leaves the store ineligible. Before changing plans, identify the checkout rates that rely on a carrier service and check the proposed plan’s eligibility.
Use parcel costs to set customer charges
Compare parcel prices for the weights and destinations you intend to ship before choosing flat checkout charges. For a free rate, account for the parcel cost in your selling decisions while charging the customer nothing for shipping.
The cheapest bookable price for a 1 kg parcel within Ireland was €9.74 with GLS, with a delivery estimate of 1–3 days, in prices checked on 5 October 2026.
The cheapest bookable price for a 1 kg parcel from Ireland to the United Kingdom was €10.69 with UPS, with a delivery estimate of 1–3 days, in prices checked on 5 October 2026.
Use the quote tool for your parcel’s weight and destination. Compare the weights you intend to cover with a flat rate or weight condition. For a UK zone, use the United Kingdom route page to review the parcel weights priced before setting its charge.
Add HS codes and country of origin
Shopify recommends HS codes and country of origin for all products to improve duty and import tax calculations. Prepare both fields across your catalogue alongside the shipping profiles and rates.
- Use an individual product page to add customs information to a product.
- Use the bulk editor to add customs information across product records.
- Upload product HS codes by CSV through the duties and import taxes management page.
If you upload HS codes by CSV, include country of origin in your product review and add it through a product page or the bulk editor. Check both fields when preparing newly added products for overseas orders.
