Compare the label prices available to your account for the same monthly basket of packed parcels, then add subscription fees and billed weight adjustments. Shopify says the amount paid for a shipping label is calculated separately during fulfilment, so use that expense when calculating your postage costs.

Count the orders you expect to post
Build a monthly basket of the domestic orders you expect to send. Count the parcels in each packed weight band, then use those counts for every option. A mixed basket needs a subtotal for each band before you add the monthly fee.
- Weigh each parcel with its packaging.
- Record the number of parcels in each weight band.
- Enter the rate available to your account for each band.
- Add the subscription fee and any billed weight adjustments.
For occasional orders, calculate the cost for the month in which you would pay the subscription. A calculation based on a busier month can spread the fee across more labels than you actually buy.
To calculate how much postage your shop pays, subtract the shipping money collected from customers from the total postage expense. Record that result alongside the full expense.
An Post labels in Ireland: published prices
EirPost publishes domestic label prices for parcels up to 2 kg, with An Post tracking included.
| Packed weight | Discounted label | Retail label |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 500 g | €6.90 | €10.00 |
| Up to 1 kg | €7.90 | Not supplied |
| Up to 1.5 kg | €8.90 | Not supplied |
| Up to 2 kg | €9.90 | €12.00 |
EirLink describes discounted rates on Plus and the first three labels of a free account, followed by retail rates.
EirPost lists Plus at €19 a month for unlimited labels and bulk processing, and requires Irish business verification for access to wholesale An Post rates.
| Cost or condition | Published term |
|---|---|
| Free-tier allowance | First three labels described as discounted, with the free-tier guide using the wording “3 free discounted labels” |
| After the allowance | Retail rates without a subscription |
| Prepaid balance | Card top-ups from €10, non-refundable and without expiry |
| Billed weight | Difference deducted from the balance if An Post bills a heavier band |
| Failed label | No charge, or money returned to the balance |
Use the rate attached to your account
Enter your agreed An Post rate if you already have a business account. For prepaid labels, enter the discounted or retail rate available to that account. Add the subscription only to the option that requires it.
For the free-tier calculation, confirm the initial allowance before counting a saving. Use the stated retail prices for later labels where a price is available.
A complete free-tier total for a mixed basket needs the retail rate for every weight band in that basket. The figures above supply retail prices for the lightest and heaviest bands. Leave the other retail subtotals uncalculated until you have the rates for your account.
- Choose the account route and record its rates.
- Complete business verification before budgeting for wholesale prices.
- Calculate the label subtotal for your monthly basket.
- Add the subscription fee where it applies.
- Record prepaid top-ups separately from the labels charged to the balance.
A top-up moves money into your shipping balance. Count the label deductions as postage expense, then track the remaining balance as money already paid into the account.
Compare monthly totals at the same weight
Among the prices PostCompare compares, An Post’s cheapest bookable domestic price was €12.25 for a 1 kg parcel and €14.98 for a 2 kg parcel, both with 3–5 days delivery, in prices checked on 5 October 2026.
The worked totals below use the published discounted label rate plus the €19 monthly fee. They assume your account qualifies for that rate, every parcel stays within the stated band and there are no billed weight adjustments.
| Parcel weight | Parcel count | Discounted labels plus fee | Dated bookable total | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kg | 4 | €50.60 | €49.00 | Subscription calculation costs €1.60 more |
| 1 kg | 5 | €58.50 | €61.25 | Subscription calculation costs €2.75 less |
| 2 kg | 4 | €58.60 | €59.92 | Subscription calculation costs €1.32 less |
| 2 kg | 5 | €68.50 | €74.90 | Subscription calculation costs €6.40 less |
Multiply the parcel count by the rate available to your account, then add the monthly fee. For the separately bookable option, multiply the same parcel count by its dated price. For mixed weights, add the band subtotals before applying the fee.
Use domestic parcel prices to compare the weights in your own basket.
Print labels and record the final charge
Buy the prepaid label online, print it at home and hand the parcel in at a post office. The published domestic label offer includes An Post tracking and supports a 4x6 thermal label.
Choose the weight band using the packed parcel. Round up when in doubt, as the label service’s help guidance advises. A later deduction for a heavier billed band increases that order’s postage cost.
Record the original label charge against the order. Add any later weight deduction to the same record, then update the monthly subtotal. Use the final charges when calculating your next basket.
Check the remaining prepaid balance before buying another batch. A failed label returns money to the balance, so match that credit to the failed order before calculating the month’s expense.
Questions
What is the cheapest Shopify shipping in Ireland?
Calculate the total for your parcel weights and monthly volume using the rates available to your account. Add subscription fees and billed weight adjustments to the label subtotal.
How do I calculate An Post small seller postage costs?
Multiply the parcel count in each weight band by its rate, then add the band subtotals. Add any monthly subscription and later weight deductions.
How does a €19 subscription affect occasional orders?
At the published €7.90 discounted rate, four labels plus the subscription total €50.60. Five labels plus the subscription total €58.50.
Can I use the lightest label price for every Shopify order?
Use the band for each packed parcel. The published discounted domestic rates run from €6.90 up to 500 g to €9.90 up to 2 kg.
What happens if a parcel is heavier than declared?
The prepaid label terms say the parcel is charged at the billed weight band, with the difference deducted from the balance. Add that deduction to the order’s original label charge.
