How to connect An Post to Shopify without a carrier account

Decide whether you want to enter tracking yourself or have an app update Shopify when you create a label. For the manual route, buy your label externally and add its tracking number in Shopify’s admin.

Prepare the orders you intend to send before buying labels. Match each parcel to its Shopify order and use the parcel’s weight and destination when checking the price. For a batch, keep the order reference beside the corresponding label and tracking number.

Shopify omits Ireland from its published list of fulfilment locations eligible to buy labels through Shopify Shipping. For orders dispatched from Ireland, use an external route to buy your An Post labels.

Shopify says tracking numbers from labels purchased outside Shopify Shipping can be added directly in the admin.

When comparing an external app, read its carrier account requirement and its stated fulfilment behaviour. Check how orders arrive, how labels are created and what happens to the Shopify order after label creation.

EirPost says it requires no An Post business account, contract or monthly minimum and accepts Shopify order CSV files for bulk labels, which sellers print at home before dropping parcels at a post office.

1. Prepare the Shopify order CSV for the parcels you intend to send.
2. Upload the file to the label service and generate the labels.
3. Print the labels and match each one to its parcel and Shopify order.
4. Add each tracking number to the corresponding order in Shopify’s admin.
5. Hand the labelled parcels in at a post office.

For sellers without a carrier account, EirLink says its EirPost route creates An Post labels from a prepaid balance for parcels up to 2 kg, imports unfulfilled Shopify orders automatically and sends tracking to Shopify, fulfils the order and notifies the customer when a label is created.

Check the parcel weight before choosing this route. Have the parcel ready for dispatch before creating its label, because that action triggers the fulfilment update and customer notification.

EirLink says its own-account route requires an An Post eCommHub business account with API access and its API key, with postage billed directly to that account at the rates agreed with An Post.

Shiptheory lists an An Post connection for Shopify and other ecommerce platforms. Its setup guidance says you need an active An Post account.

According to its Shopify App Store listing, Shiptheory’s Earth plan costs $62 a month or $600 a year. It covers 1 user, 1 sales channel and 2 carriers, with a limit of 1,500 shipments a month.

Before paying for an account-based app, establish your carrier account terms and any required API access. Use your agreed An Post rates when calculating postage for that connection.

Use the quote tool to compare prices for your parcel’s weight and destination. Record the actual label charge against the dispatched order, and include any app subscription in your shop’s shipping costs.

Check the order reference when attaching a label and entering tracking. Complete the tracking entry for every dispatched order, including orders whose labels you created in a batch.

For an automatic connection, check whether creating a label fulfils the order before you process a batch. Pack those orders first if you want them ready for dispatch when the customer notification goes out.
