Review your US shipping offer
Start with the wording you use to sell delivery to US customers. US Customs and Border Protection says the specified de minimis duty-free treatment became unavailable for covered shipments. Remove any promise of that treatment for covered orders from your delivery page and saved customer quotes.
CBP announced indefinite suspension of the postal de minimis exemption for imports of $800 or less on 24 June 2026. Its subsequent postal guidance requires covered merchandise to use the new entry process from 24 July 2026.
Review the explanation of duties and import taxes shown before purchase. State who pays those charges under your chosen delivery terms.
Prepare customs data for your products
Shopify recommends HS codes and country of origin for all products to improve duty and import tax calculations. Use that recommendation across the catalogue you offer to US customers.
- List the distinct products in the order you are quoting.
- Review the HS code and country of origin recorded for each product.
- Complete missing product data before using it to prepare the duty and import tax calculation.
Include newly added products in this review before quoting their delivery to the US. For a basket containing different products, review each product’s information rather than copying the customs data from one item across the basket.
Do not promise a fixed tariff for every US order.
Choose who pays import charges
Choose the payment terms before presenting a landed-cost offer. According to Shopify, DDP makes the merchant or sender responsible for duties, import clearance and applicable taxes. Under DAP or DDU, the receiver or customer settles duties and import taxes.
| Terms | Who pays | Charges covered |
|---|---|---|
| DDP | Merchant or sender | Duties, import clearance and applicable taxes |
| DAP or DDU | Receiver or customer | Duties and import taxes |
Write the payment responsibility in plain language beside the delivery charge.
For DDP, include the sender’s stated responsibilities when preparing the customer’s total. Confirm the terms with the provider where your service or account agreement leaves responsibility unclear.
Use the US postal informal entry guidance
CBP says the new postal informal entry process generally applies to eligible mailed merchandise valued at $2,500 or less. Use its official postal guidance when assessing a mailed order.
Review the merchandise value against that ceiling and check eligibility under the guidance before choosing the postal route.
When preparing the delivery offer, record whether you are considering a postal service or a courier service. Apply CBP’s postal entry guidance to the covered mailed merchandise.
Compare parcel prices and build your quote
Match the parcel price to the weight you are sending. For a 1 kg parcel from Ireland to the United States, the cheapest bookable price was €29.29 with UPS, with a listed delivery time of 1–3 days, in prices checked on 5 October 2026.
For a 2 kg parcel on the same route, the cheapest bookable price was €38.81 with FedEx, with a listed delivery time of 4–6 days, in prices checked on 5 October 2026.
Use the US route page to compare prices for your parcel weight. The quote tool shows the available prices for a weight and destination, cheapest first.
Use the selected parcel price as the delivery charge in your customer quote.
Check proposed requirements before changing procedures
CBP’s Low-Value Shipments proposal would add data and bonding requirements for certain informal entries. Label those requirements as proposed in any staff instructions or customer information you prepare.
Before using a saved US quote, check it for these errors:
- An old promise of de minimis duty-free treatment for covered orders.
- Missing HS codes or country of origin for products in the basket.
- Delivery wording that leaves the customer’s duty and import tax responsibility unstated.
- Proposed data or bonding requirements described as current obligations.
