Prepare product weights and packaging
Shopify recommends entering accurate product weights, confirming fulfilment locations and setting a default package. Record the package’s outside dimensions and the weight of the packaging. Do this before building weight-based delivery charges.
- Enter an accurate weight for each product that will use a weight condition.
- Review where you fulfil those products so you can organise the relevant shipping profiles.
- Use the outside measurements and packaging weight of the default package you intend to post.
Choose sample baskets containing the products you actually sell together. Include a basket with several items when checking weight conditions. Use these baskets later to review the delivery charge at checkout, after you have entered your rates.
Organise shipping profiles and destination zones
Shopify says custom shipping profiles can cover products needing different rates or fulfilment locations. Shipping zones group countries and regions, with rates assigned within the relevant profile. For an Irish shop, decide which destinations each product group will serve before entering charges.
- Identify products that can share delivery charges and products that need different rates.
- Review the fulfilment locations for those products.
- Use custom profiles for the products needing different rates or fulfilment locations.
- Group the countries and regions you serve into zones within each relevant profile.
- Assign your chosen delivery rates to each zone.
Build the domestic zone around your Irish delivery charges. For overseas zones, use prices for the destinations included. Review the applicable profile and its rates when adding a country or a product with different delivery requirements.
Choose flat, free or weight-based charges
According to Shopify, shipping settings support flat, free or carrier-calculated rates. Flat rates can have conditions based on order value or weight. Choose the rule that fits how you want to charge customers, then enter the amount and any conditions.
| Rate choice | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Flat | Set a fixed charge for matching orders within a zone. |
| Free | Set a free rate. |
| Weight-based | Apply weight conditions to flat rates so different order weights have different charges. |
| Carrier-calculated | Use a carrier service that provides real-time rates, subject to the plan requirements. |
For weight-based charges, write down the weight bands and the charge for each band. Check baskets at the boundaries, including one just below and one just above a condition.
Use An Post prices to set your charges
For a 1 kg parcel within Ireland, An Post’s cheapest bookable price among the prices PostCompare compares was €12.25, with delivery in 3–5 days, in prices checked on 5 October 2026.
For a 2 kg parcel within Ireland, An Post’s cheapest bookable price among those compared was €14.98, with delivery in 3–5 days, in prices checked on 5 October 2026.
Use the quote tool to compare prices for the parcel weight and destination you want a checkout charge to cover. Apply domestic figures to domestic charges. Use destination-specific prices when setting overseas rates.
Shopify says the amount paid for a shipping label is calculated separately during fulfilment. When budgeting for free delivery, include that label cost in the amount your shop pays to fulfil the order. For a fixed customer charge, compare the amount you plan to collect with the parcel price for the orders it covers.
Check app-calculated rates and plan requirements
Shopify says a carrier service provides real-time shipping rates. When assessing an app for An Post orders, look for an explicit description of that checkout function in its documentation.
Require a stated real-time rate function before choosing an app to calculate delivery charges.
Shopify says third-party carrier-calculated shipping is included on Advanced and Plus. Grow can add it through annual billing or an extra monthly fee.
Check your plan’s access before building your setup around live rates. If you choose Grow’s extra monthly fee option, establish the fee under your account terms before budgeting for it.
Check how matching rates combine
Shopify says opt-in to its new shipping setup began on 1 October 2026. It says the setup will be enabled for all shops on 1 July 2027.
Under the new setup, Shopify applies the highest matching rate within a shipping option rather than adding matching rates together. Check whether your shop has opted in before calculating the expected delivery charge for a basket with several matching rates.
- Check a basket containing products from different shipping profiles.
- Check a basket containing products from different fulfilment locations.
- Check baskets matching different weight or order-value conditions.
Compare each checkout result with the rates assigned to that shipping option. Repeat these checks after opting in, before setting advertised delivery charges around the new calculation.
