Where the surcharge applies

Ireland is included in Amazon’s European surcharge alongside the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium. The charge applies to sellers using Fulfilment by Amazon in these countries.

If you use Amazon fulfilment across several of these markets, include the surcharge in each affected market’s fulfilment cost calculation. Sellers in the United States and Canada pay a higher surcharge of 3.5%, as reported by Ecommerce News Europe.

Calculate the extra cost

Use the fulfilment fee for the item as the starting figure. Multiply that fee by 1.5% to calculate the surcharge, then add the result to the fee to get the total.

A higher fulfilment fee produces a larger surcharge in cash terms. Changing the item’s sale price alone leaves this calculation unchanged because Amazon bases the percentage on the fulfilment fee.

Why Amazon is adding the charge

Amazon attributes the extra transport costs to the war in the Middle East. The company says the measure is temporary in principle.

Amazon puts the average surcharge at 5 cent per item for its fulfilment shipments within the EU. Use your item’s fulfilment fee to work out its charge rather than applying that average to every item.
